Sacrifices....this won't be my last lesson either!

But what has become of me…well I can make a wicked Poke Bowel (a Hawaiian dish of raw, fish normally Ahi tuna), I can wash dishes in record time, make small talk with anyone, and can juggle 2 jobs, Crossfit, and a long distance relationship like a pro. Am I tired? Yes…do I want this to be the rest of my life no!! I’m hoping to cut it down to one job, keep Crossfit, and finally have a normal close distance relationship (28 more days till I be in AZ).

This past month I got the chance to learn something that will help me later on down the road. I feel I have been able to learn the true meaning of sacrifice.  It’s something I taught many investigators. However, I was only able to share other peoples’ experiences. Now I finally have one of my own (that I’ll use when I go out with the missionaries).
As I was leaving the mission, I remember being told (by who I have no clue) the importance of being generous with your fast offering. Meaning, instead of thinking “So lets say I ate breakfast at McDonalds and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch…so I will give X amount for fast offerings.” But in turn think “I went to IHOP for breakfast and I got the decked out strawberries and cream pancakes with eggs and bacon and an extra side of hash browns because you know how I love me some potatoes and then for lunch you hit up Red Robin’s because their burgers are soooooo good and their bottomless fries are heaven…so I will give X amount for fast offerings.” See how your end up giving (maybe even sacrificing) more for your fast offering? Even President Kimball agrees with that stating, “ I think we should be very generous and give, instead of the amount we saved by our two meals of fasting, perhaps much, much more—then times more where we are in a position to do it.”
However, why do we really pay fast offerings? I mean, besides the obvious reason of helping those in need, why are we asked to give that money we would’ve used for two meals?? I couldn’t have put it better than Isaiah when he speaks about it in chapter 58, verses 8-11

¶Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the Lord shall be thy rearward.
 Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:
11 And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

I’ll leave it to you to count the blessings promised to those who obey the law fast in those verses. I really want to focus on one promised blessing. “Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, here I am.” Wow! I love that promise! In regards to this scripture, President Harold B. Lee said, “ Do we ever want to be in a condition where we can call and he WON’T answer? We will cry out in distress and he WON’T be with us? I think it is time we are thinking about these fundamentals because these are the days that lie ahead, when we are going to need more and more blessings of the Lord.” Um, yeah…who wouldn’t want to have the confidence that they could receive the Lord’s help when it’s most needed? I don’t know about you, but I sure would!

Then again, while the blessings to come are a bit motivating, we must always remember, what we do for our neighbor, we do unto the Lord. When we have others in mind as we pay our fast offering we end up helping ourselves. All in all, fast offering isn’t so much for others, but for us. To prepare us “for the day when the higher law, that of consecration, will again become the financial law of the Church through which we will properly take care of the poor. Until that time, it is our responsibility and blessings—as a matter of fact, our covenant—to give generously from our surplus to bless the poor.” (Fast Offerings: Fulfilling our Responsibility to others, Bishop Victor L. Brown)

So what was it that I learned for myself this month about fast offerings? Well, as I was getting ready to seal up the envelope that contained my tithing and fast offering, I got this feeling like it wasn’t enough. In my head I thought, “well, yeah that should be good enough” So I got up and went to do other things. As I was going along my business, that same feeling came back, but stronger. I walked back into the kitchen opened up the envelope, opened my wallet and just sat there thinking ‘how much is enough Lord?!’. I then proceeded to take the rest of the money (all from tips) and one by one put them into the envelope. Once I had put all my left over ones in that little grey envelope the feeling had left me. I cried a little…still not really sure why, maybe out of my own selfishness or just realizing how faithless I had been. Either way I was taught a valuable lesson on how I should never be greedy with my fast offerings. Sacrifices are not easy at all, but they bring many blessings down the road. Let’s not forget that this offering is a “freewill” offering…meaning its up to us to decide what is generous or not. Yet let us remember what the Prophets have said about this matter. But in the end it is you and the Lord, and with the guidance of the Spirit you will be able to determine what the right amount is for your fast offering.

Starting from zero

Sister Robyn Perez – Week 37 – received 09/22/14
In Jaguariuna, Campinas, Brazil

Wow, so this week was a bit discouraging. When we came into this area we had 15 people with a baptism date. Right now we have 2, but only one went to church and she is waiting for the right time. And the other persondidn’t make it to church. It’s even harder because our Zone Leader thinks we are fubecando (slacking) because our first 2 weeks were goodbut as we met with each of the investigatores we realized that they don’t have the desire to get baptized and we had to drop them. So this past week we really started opening this area. Then one morning as I was reading in Matthew I read a perfect scripture.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savourwherewith shall it be salted? it is
thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of  men.

When I read this I was like "what does this mean". I did some deep studying and came to this conclusion. Many are called but few are chosen. There are a lot of members but only a few are super strong, only a few are trulyconsecrated and converted. Like you only need a little salt to add a flavor...the few that are chosen are good enough to help build the kingdom of God on the earth. Then I thought; well Sister Garibay and I were chosen to help this area grow. We are qualified! But we need to be truly converted to this great work. If we show that we want to find os eleitos, the Lord will put them in our path. BUT we need to show our worthiness. We need to constantly be exactly obedient. And we need to be the salt of Jaguariuna. So yeah, missions are tough, but it’sonly to help prepare us to be better members of Christ's church. This work isn’t meant to be easy, but it’sdoable.

Eu amo vocês!

Running, running and a tad bit of sleeping

Sister Robyn Perez – Week 36 – received 09/15/14

In Jaguariuna, Campinas, Brazil

don’t think I’ve ever been so tired. I probably said that last week...but seriously it’s true!! Every day Sister Garibay and I say that we will get home at 9 so we can be in bed by 940....it never happened. We would always be teaching or walking home from a lesson and then we'd end up getting home at 9:15 or later. But this isn’t a bad thing. It’s actually and oddly a good thing! It means we are working! And working we are! We've found a good teaching pool and now we are just trying to really focus on these people. We are also trying to knock some more doors to find even more. The only thing is that it’s HOT! It starts getting hot at 8 in the morning anddoesn’t cool down till like 6pm. We have to apply sunblock like 20 times! And we are always running to the bathroom because we drink so much water! And it’s supposed to get hotter!!! Ha, winter here should be fun!!

Sister Garibay and I are now really good friends! It’s almost like me and Sister Johnsonalmost, but no one will ever beat my "mom". It’s true when you have a really good relationship with your comp, the teaching goes way better!

Jaguariuna 2 is so blessed! Why, because the members in this part love working with the missionaries! One of our recent converts took us to her friend. Then one member had us talk to her co-worker, and the co-worker took us to a neighbor. It’s awesome because these people have friends who are already members or about to be members and it’s easier to teach them the gospel!

Something sad...I had a dream that I was already done with my mission. I woke up in a panic and was like,"NO!!!! I still have a ton of months!" ha, yeah not totally. Time here is flying so fast and soon I’ll be at 9 months. After I had that dream I promised Heavenly Father that I will work with all my might till my last day! Ican’t think of anything better than sharing the gospel with the people here in Jag 2. I’ve never been happier and as tired! Haha, but for real! This gospel is true! I know we have a living profeta que guides and directs us. And I know that my Savior lives!

I got transferred

Sister Robyn Perez – Week 34 – received 09/01/14

I finally got transferred!!!

I’m trying to think about all the things that happened this week...but my mind is so blank and I’m so dead!! This week was good...but I’m just super worn out! This always happens at the end of the transfer! But we finally had a baptism!!!! No it wasnt Alex...it was Mauricia!!!!!!!! We just focused on her this week really hard and we finally got her into the waters! It was a stressful day for her because her husband could have gotten baptized...but he just wasnt ready. I told her that women always know what they need to do to help their families and the men are just a little slower, but she will be such a strong example for him!!! Then on Sunday we didnt see her at church and we were running around like crazy looking and calling her....she had called Alberto e Ariane for a ride and got to church on time!! AH! I love her!!! Then that evening we went and saw her mom and step dad and gave them a quick lesson! She helped us teach. And I repeat…I love her!! I was getting sorta sad because its transfersMauricia said, “I just want you 3 to say and the other 2 to leave....well, her wish came true. Pontes and Ttupa are leaving and MitilloMoura, and I are staying....yep...I’m staying. I got transferred to Jag 2...and I’m opening the area or in other words I’m white washing it...its next door to my old area but I have no clue what or where anything is! But I’m super stoked to get a new comp and work in this new...neighboring area!!! I’m super sad I’m getting separated from Pontes...but tudo vai da certo!

Keep the faith meu povo!

P.S. I make 8 months today!!!

You can do it!

Sister Robyn Perez – Week 33 – received 08/25/14

The Day Sister Perez got the "You Can Do It" Bug

This week was awesome! It was a week where you work so hard that the minute your head hits the pillow you are out until the next morning!

I spent two days with sister Moura in Mogi Mirim for exchanges with the sisters there. It was really fun...but really, really hot! And they dont use the bus, so I walked all day with Sister Whitnah. All of our appointments fell through, so it was a "normal" day. That night was really funny. Sister Moura and I slept on the kitchen floor, on air mattresses....during the middle of the night I got super cold and woke Moura up and told her "mouratenho frio!" so she got up and moved my bed next to hers and we shared the huge blanket. Right as I was falling alseep she said " We are just like the pioneers in the winter" (but in Português) hahaha. When we talked about that in the morning we just laughed. Then we had lunch at a chácara. This place was so pretty! Soon after that we took a bus back to Jag. We were pretty much dead when we got home...but I was happy to be back in my bed...and area!

We finally got to see Alex again. When we went in for the lesson Moura told me to start it. So I sorta had an idea in my head of what I wanted to say...but like right as I was about to start, the Holy Ghost smacked me in the head and was like " no you are gonna read this chapter with him and talk about being strong in keeping the commandments." Its crazy how much the Spirit helps your investigators. We had a really good chat with him as we read 1 Nefi 2. We asked him if he was ready to give up all the things of the world to follow Christ like Lehi did...and then we recommitted him to dia 30 for baptism. I told him the first day we met him, Sister Becker and I saw him the way Heavenly Father sees him. Heavenly Father knows he is strong and we know he is strong...he just has to see that! But hes super solid now!!

Sunday was like a huge day for me (according to Moura) she told me I finally got attitude to get stuff done and not be scared. It all started with getting Neuza to church. I called her house, but she was still sleeping...so I told Mitillo that we were going to walk to her house and get her to church. So we did. And we waited for her to get ready. And she went to church. And she loved it! Then we had to go pick up Mauricia (when I first called she didnt want to go to church either). We ended up having 8 investigators at church! It was seriously a miracle! And then during Sacrament meeting there was a group of kids sitting behind me and a family. They would not stop talking. At first I was like just ignore it, but then something was like no tell them to be quite. Haha, so I did. I told the Bishops daughter, and the other girls to have more respect for their Heavenly Father and the other people and stop talking so that the members and our investigators can feel the Spirit. Yeah...I was like "why did I just do that!!" ha, ha but soon after Sacrament meeting I told the Bishop that we need to talk to the youth about reverence in the Sacrament meeting. He agreed with me...ha, after I told Moura and she was like so happy I did that. I was like scared. Haha

I’m excited for the last week of the transfer. I have a feeling ill be leaving Jag...but I’m ok with that. I feel like Ive already talked to everyone in this city. So hopefully I’ll get a different scenery this next transfer!!!

There aren't enough hours in our days!!

Week 31

Sister Robyn Perez – Brazil Mission

Letter received 08/11/14

So I decided to write out my email last night so I wouldn’t waste time thinking of all the things that happened this week...Mom, you'll be so happy for this :)

Now that Sister Moura stopped putting us through her crazy training...things are awesome. I’m not stressed at all...and our area is booming! But Ill start with some sad news first. Alex wasn’t ready to be baptized yet, but we’re working with him and remaining hopeful!!! When we found out, you could tell he was sad...but we gave him a pump-up lesson and he said he would work to be ready for baptism for sure. We made him a few reminders to put up in his house! The following day he tried to bring us breakfast, but we missed his call. Later that same day he met us at the park with his friend that he's been trying to bring to church. We talked to them for a good bit and then Alex bought us some dolce. Hes awesome doing missionary work and he wont even be a memberuntil this Saturday! And as of today, he is doing super, super good!!

As for Mauricia e Josimar...pelo amor! We cannot get them to church!! Mauricia really wants to get baptized, she even told her mom, but you cant be baptized...yet alone get sealed in the temple, if you cant make it to church. So, this week we’ll try a little bit harder and hope they make it to church Sunday.

We have a ton of pesquisadres (investigators) that all have baptism datesscheduled...but our problem is church attendance! We started teaching about the importance of O Dia do Senhor..but then I remembered my state-side mission and the power of the Book of Mormon. President Batt was so right to push the Book of Mormon right at the beginning of teaching...lol..because if we get our pesquis to read and gain a testimony of the Book oMormon the rest will all follow (church, baptism, knowledge that Joseph Smith was a profeta (prophet) and that this is the only true and living church). So now we are reading and helping ourpesquis understand and gain a testimony of the Book oMormon...well,we will be starting this tomorrow! Im so grateful for my state-side mission!!

Since Sister Moura is my Sister Training Leader, she gave me a few things to work on. She pretty much said I’m way too loving and not bold enough. I’m bold with my pesquis (investigators)...but not with my companions and members, so I worked really hard on that this week. I've realized that she just sits back and watches and waits for me to do something. For example at one of our lunch appointments Sister Mitillo tried pouringjuice that she had already drank from back into the container. When I saw what was happening I told her that she cant do that! Sister Moura told me she was silently cheering me on and then I told her after that I was silently repenting for saying that to Sister Mitillo. She told me that one day Im going to get a comp that is going to need a lot of help doing the right things and I have the ability to help them boldly with lots of love. Ha, whoknew being too nice was a bad thing!!

Ah! I forgot to talk about our lesson with a recent convert/inactive family. The other night we went to just read the Book oMormon with Beatriz e Leticia. I had no clue exactly what was going to happen, but Sister Mouratold me to just start the lesson and they'll go with the flow. So I thought how we are trying to plan a FHE and watch the Restoration filme, so Ipicked Néfi 3 that talked about Joseph Smith. Ok, first off that was totally inspired by the spirit. The whole chapter talks about keeping the commandments and remembering the covenants you've made and it was just perfect for Leticia because afterwards she opened up to us and told us why going back to church is hard for her! Ahhhh!! Gentes....you seriously need to have the spirit all the time or you cant help your people!!! I love my job as a missionary and I love this gospel!!

Until next week meu povo!!

Sister Perez

Crazy... She's crazy!

Week 30

Sister Robyn Perez – Brazil Mission

Letter received 08/05/14

Meu Povo!! (MY People)

Ok...so last week and this week sister Mitillo and I were super worried about our companion, Sister Moura. She was super unhappy and a bit annoyed and sometimes mad. We tried everything. I literally prayed to have more patience and love so I could help her be happy. I even talked to Sister Perrotti (mission President’s wife) about her! I mean she drove us nuts, when she refused to participate. We were just stressed! Well today it all came out that she was doing it on purpose. It’s her form of training us to become better independent sisters.....oh my goodness! After she said this I was ready to throw something at her...and so was Sister Mitillo. But in a weird way her craziness worked on us. We learned to get things done no matter what. I learned to pick up the phone and call people (which I hate). I learned to help out Sister Mitillo, in a loving way spend less time in the bathroom. Overall, we learned that no matter how lazy or rebellious our comp is we need to be super obedient and do what we know is right. It was a tough 2 weeks....but I think we, Sister Mitillo and I are better missionaries that we were 2 weeks ago. Im still learning to be more brave, but I have a lot more confidence now. I love Sister Moura now...and this week will be awesome!!

Hopefully, Alex will be getting baptized this Saturday! We are still working with our other families, Mauricia and Josimar. They are now really good friends with Alberto e Ariane. AndMauricia is already doing missionary work and shes not even a member!! She invited one of her friends to her house so we could teach her!! Once she gets baptized she has the potential to be such a strong member!

On a funnier note, the teacher for the Sunday School class for the teenagers asked me to go in and talk about something super complicated in English.....so I went in and I attempted to talk about how certain foods you eat affect your blood sugar levels...well, I repeated myself so many times because I honestly couldnt remember English. At the end I was like....I cant remember anything and they all laughed. Its much easier for me to speak Portuguese now!!

Here is our chapter for our trio Jacob 7...we live by it now!

Week 29

Sister Robyn Perez – Brazil Mission

Letter received 07/28/14

(Note: The name of the city where Robyn lives is Jaguariunaand she does missionary work in various neighboring cities, all of which are suburbs of Campinas.)

It’s a new transfer and it is going to be a great one!!! Seriously!

At first I was freaking out...really! And then when we were all at the Rodoviária I found out I was companions with a sister-training-leader, Sister Moura...I wasn’t too worried. Then my new Zone leader was like "Sister Perez, Sister Mitillo is also your comp and she’s finishing her 12th week." So I’m with a Sister Training Leader (a trainer) and a trainee and then I’m sorta just awkwardly there.... But hey positivity is key! I was going to make this a great transfer! So we all got home (and might I add that we don’t have a bed for the third sister) planned our week and started working. Oh boy...this is going to be the best transfer by far!!! Everyone says being in a trio is hard...ha, not! I love being in this dupla e mais uma! We all have awesome ideas and we all want to work super hard and we all have the same vision! As of right now we have 5 people on date for baptism and one is for this week! We are totally going to slay this area this transfer!!!

Alma 32:
41 But if ye will nourish the word, yea, nourish the tree as itbeginneth to grow, by your faith with great diligence, and with patience, looking forward to the fruit thereof, it shall take root; and behold it shall be a tree springing up unto everlasting life.

42 And because of your diligence and your faith and your patience with the word in nourishing it, that it may take root in you, behold, by and by ye shall pluck the fruit thereof, which is most precious, which is sweet above all that is sweet, and which is white above all that is white, yea, and pure above all that is pure; and ye shall feast upon this fruit even until ye are filled, that ye hunger not, neither shall ye thirst.

43 Then, my brethren, ye shall reap the rewards of your faith, and your diligence, and patience, and long-suffering, waiting for the tree to bring forth fruit unto you.

We are aiming high and testing our faith with all the people we meet and all our members!! We will see miracles!

When you are "Party Bots" you see so many miracles!

This week we started fresh looking for all new investigators! We literally had no one to teach at the beginning of the week. I never thought "oh no we aren’t going to find anyone" My only thought was "This street will have the elect" Positive thinking...its key! Of course not every house wants to hear the Gospel...you have to go through a lot of them to find the golden one. Then we found Alex. We ended up doing "How to Begin Teaching" in his drive way. And I was thinking I’m not leaving without inviting him to baptism. So I started the invite and looked at my companion, Sister Becker to get the "I was thinking the same thing" look and continued. He said yes!!!!!!!! And then he said he would come to Noite de Integração! Then we talked to Mauricia (she was a street contact from last week) and she said that she would try to get her friend and her husband to go to Noite de Integração too. We didn’t get to teach her because her husband wasn’t there...butthat’s ok we will this week. We ended up having 7 investigators at Noite de Integração...and some of the members helped us with rides! It was an awesome night! And they all really liked it!

In the end we lost 3 of the 7 because they were super mole (not really interested) and now we are down to 4 solid investigators! They are all pretty much knee deep in water :)

OhI get to stay in Jag for another transfer!!!!! I was so nervous when we got our transfer news because I really love my area! It’s sorta weird because my companion, Sister Becker goes home tonight....she’s finished with her mission!! I’m glad I still have a year left!! holla!!!

Last thing...it’s getting pretty cold here...I had two cardigans and my wind breaker on the other night....ughhhhhI thought it was supposed to be hot here!!!!

Scripture of the week:

Acts 18:9-11  oh, how I love when you read a scripture that is just perfect for your life!!

9 Then spake the Lord to Paul in the night by a vision, Be not afraid, but speak, and hold not thy peace:

10 For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee: for I have much people in this city.

11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.

Te amo!!
